Car failed MOT on emissions, the garage want to charge me £200 for part and fitting, the car is only worth £250 max!

I have sourced this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEUGEOT-206-1-4-1998-01-...

But looking on ECP, they have two different types of CATS: http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Peugeot_206_1.4_...

Any ideas?

Pattern ones will usually get you through the MoT straight after fitting, but often won't next year. Been there, done that with a Peugeot 306 - solved by fitting a genuine cat off a scrapper.
As said, have a look what's fitted - there is only one fitted, but two different types & they aren't interchangable.
Put your details into this from the Bosal site & it should also show what cat you require:

Agreed with above but the cheap ones don't always pass MOT after just being fitted. Some of the better quality after market cats aren't too bad but then your going to be paying a lot more than £40 quid for a cat. If the eBay cat isn't any good you can kiss your money goodbye

Don't understand why people trust EBay stuff. A nationwide outfit like GSF is showing O/E quality ones for £93.

There may be a couple listed too as you can buy type approved and non type approved. There were some changes to mots regarding this for cars after a certain age but i cant remember what exactly.
I was led to believe the type approved cats are of a better quality, as already said the real cheap ones may not get the car through mot even when new.

It's the internals that do the trick, and cost the money, genuine cats contain platinum which is very expensive and lasts a long time.Cheep ones contain ceramic or what ever and last a year or so.
the best example is when the scrap metal boys visit our w/shop,they pay good money for used genuine cats but won't even take aftermarket ones away.

They all contain some amount of precious metals, but the cheap ones contain such minute quantities that they don't work very well from new and tend to expire in very short order. Ceramic is often used as the main substrate which is then coated in platinum, it won't do anything useful by itself.
