Hi the engine management light come on my 51 plate Suzuki swift gls. My friend has a computer able to plug in to find the fault. It came back with P0135 O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1). He cleared it but the light came back on. How much would it likely cost to have this sorted at a local garage? Thanks for any advice.

Its only an oxygen sensor, they are trivial to replace - most likely about £80 from euro car parts (if that) and re generally easy to replace, if you can hold a spanner the right way, you can most likely do it yourself.

Broadly true, but you will need to get underneath the car and hope you can undo it with an open ended spanner and hope it's not seized.

If it's sensor 1 then it's possible you won't need to get under the car and it's at the manifold

No damage will be done at all. The heater in the lamba sensor is there to get it up to working temperature as quick as possible so your car is running the correct mixture straight away. It only takes a few minutes for your exhaust to get hot by itself so the worse thing happening is incorrect air to fuel ratio for a matter of minutes, but it's something you should sort out.

As it's the bank one sensor you should be able to reach it from under the bonnet,

Splash out £5 and get yourself one of these,

Not a bad job to do yourself maybe give it a soak with some plus gas the night before when the engine is hot to let it soak in and away you go!

Thanks I'll lift my bonnet tomorrow and have a look. Should it be near the engine then?

Could the emissions test be an issue?

I think emmission control lights are an MOT failure. You might want to check the fuse for the heater circuit before paying for a new sensor. The wiring for the sensor can get melted if it touches the exhaust and short out giving the heater circuit error.

Thanks engine management light that's on you wouldn't no what that fault is without checking it with a computer to diagnose. Would it cause a problem when they do the emissions test?

A plain old Engine management light isn't an MOT fail.

It could in theory affect emissions but I'd expect it wouldn't cause a fail if everything else is working.

Have you nit fixed this yet? Also mot rules have changed, and if its due a test, now having a management light on is not an advisory, its a fail.
