deep dish pistons
Discussion
hello all,got a question for yall,i have a chevy 350,block had a cracked head and water went in on top of piston and was put up for years, friend gave me motor, tore it down, block in real good shape ,except #7 were the piston had water on top, anyway i took to machine shop and machinist told me .020 over would clean them up because of condition of block, well i gave the go ahead for a .020 bore, all good right, not, they bored and honed block to.020 over everything cleaned up except#7 hole ,from deck down cylinder .500 still has the rust spot about half way around cylinder.
well with that being said ,instead of calling me while block was still in jig, they took it out and called to tell me it was ready, got there and there it was rusted half way around cylinder 1/2 in deep into cylinder, all they had to do was call right,i hadnt bought pistons yet, anyway,i told them to go ahead and open another .010 ,this is what they said, once off the jig there would be a slim chance they could get another 10 out of it,and would have to open it up to .040 instead,ok i said, then he goes on to say they would have to charge for the bore agian, with all the control i had left in me,i left and contacted the better bussiness burea.
what my question for you all is does anyone no what the measurement from top of a deep dish piston is to the first ring groove, from the deck down to top of first ring is what i need to know, machinist told me a deep dish piston would land just under the bad spot, well they also said punching 20 out would clean the bores too,so i took his imformation and recommendations and said what the hell ever,i dont want to have to bore this engine agian until it needs it later in life, had it bored out 20 over new cam bearing installed with frezze plugs too,any of you motor heads out there have a solution to this trainwreck,i would really like to here from you,and thanks

That's annoying, can only agree that you should try a different machine shop.
Correct me if I'm wrong but it's not a rare engine is it? This is going to get expensive for new pistons etc, isn't it time to think about finding another block?
If you are going to overbore anyway, why worry about the 'next' rebore? The new bores should be good for hundreds of thousands of miles, and if you need to recover the block after that you can use cylinder liners
