So I've been greeted with this beautiful mess after taking off the exhaust down pipe

I'm thinking about just plastering some J-B High Heat Epoxy Putty over it but is there a better method? It's only on a shed so as cheap as possible.

Cheers

In my experience there is no cheap & easy way to do this.

I have never had any success whatever I have tried.

There is no putty/epoxy type stuff that means you won't be re-doing it every week.

My best suggestion if you REALLY don't want to repair it properly would be to cut the offending section out & weld in a replacement from a similar (better condition) pipe from a scrapper.

But you still may be re-doing it in 6 months time again.

It looks like it could be a single down-pipe, so I can't imagine it would be too expensive to replace.

Replacing isn't really an option without spending a lot of money, the whole exhaust system as been modified so I'd have to either replace it all or have new parts modified.

Sounds like the underside of your car will be a close friend (or rather foe) then.

Are you trying to tell me to buy one of these & borrow a welder is too expensive?

I've never welded before but I am tempted to learn.

It's all a bit of a mess tbh just realized there isn't even a cat fitted.

It might be a bit tricky with a MIG, but you can gas weld almost anything smile

Sorry mike but after many tears and years of vehicle repair I cannot agree with this it is not possible to weld rust together!

You haven't mastered the full skills of gas welding then smile You can weld thin rusty steel which would be completely impossible with a MIG. Obviously there has to be some steel, pure rust doesn't weld so well...

What vehicle is the down pipe from? Surely a tatty used one is a better option as a pipe bodged up with a coke can shouldn't pass an MOT?
Trying to use high temperature epoxy is a waste of time, it wouldn't last 5 minutes on the road.

It's an Alfa GTV. Paid £100 for it, brought unseen with no history, no mot and no log book but drives good. Now the weather is picking up I'm slowing working my way around the car to see what's what. It does run but was draining the battery and I guess the guy was unable to find out why and decided to ditch it.

Faults it had/has so far :

Leaking exhaust - Down pipe hole
Battery drain - Boot switch broken & boot release button stuck on. (fixed)
Oil leak - Rocker Cover Gasket
Oil on spark plugs (hoping it's just oil from flooded wells)
Handbrake not working OS (fixed)
Airbag light - Fixed

As soon as I've fitted a new rocker gasket & done a compression test, providing everything is OK I might just bite the bullet and get a new down pipe.

Search eBay for a right angle tube connector with the correct end diameters

Cut the old one off and weld new back on.
