What clearance trolley jack should I get?
Discussion
I'm looking at a more serious trolley jack, this one to be exact: http://www.sgs-engineering.com/garage-equipment/tr...
It's fully retracted height is 145mm. At the moment all my cars are tall 4x4's so I don't need a low profile jack. But, for the future, would a jack like this still work with an average car like a Ford Mondeo? Or something lower like an MX5 or something like that?

Above jack looks good for the money in honesty, at the same time I can't help but think it's too cheap...
Low jacks are usually much of a compromise in one way or another in my opinion, they cost more to buy, have a lower height at max lift and you tend to compromise on lifting capacity. Obviously this is price respective if you want to spend a shed load of cash you'll get one that does it all but frankly I've had zero issues in my years in the trade using something like these:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PAIR-OF-LOW-RISE-CAR-RAM...
Can be picked up for cheaper than that they were the first link I found.
Low entry cheese wedges, you can drive the car up that'll give you 4-6 inches additional height so you can just shove a regular jack underneath. Don't think I've ever had a car I've not been able to get a jack underneath using this method. Also quite handy for quick oil changes etc where you just a bit more space to do the job.

Thanks Classy.
Those SGS jacks do look very good on price. The company seem new and are doing a lot of marketing so maybe they are trying to kickstart their business with low prices. I ordered it today after seeing that the workshop that's building my new 4x4 chassis uses similar sized jacks. Tomorrow will see what it's like.

SGS have been going for at least 5 years and probably a lot longer, their garage equipment is excellent and they deliver stuff really quickly (I have a low entry jack and a set of ratchet axle stands)Those SGS jacks do look very good on price.
