Hi,

I got a Vauxhall zafira "B" 58' plate, 1.9 CDTI
My question is, the o/s rear brake disc back plate (Splash guard or back plate) has corroded & is now missing!
Is this an MOT failure?
Thanks in advance

This is the part in question I'm on about

I would think not, but might look better if it didn't have one on the other side wink

FR150 - I think a brake back plate is something else if that's what you're obscurely pointing out!

OP - My MINI had a brake upgrade that did away with the splash guards (as they no longer fitted) and passes its MOT just fine - perhaps they need removing as suggested above.

The back plate is the thing that the hydraulic cylinder, brake shoes etc are fixed onto.....if you are missing that item then you'll probably fail on brake efficiency as well ;-)

You are thinking of the old brake drum, where the shoes & brake cylinder are held.
On any new new car, which have rear brake disc, the only job (in my opinion) is too keep water & debris out

Correct.
So go buy a new one and get it bolted on.

did you even read the post?

I reglarly remove them, they are not testable and could only fail if they are hindering the brake performance, they are not a fail.
As to wether it needs to be there? thats up to you, TBH without it there IMHO is there is less chance of a debret getting stuck in there, the only issue would be water possably overcoolong the one discs and unbalencing the rear brakes accross the axle but as the rears typicly do around 15% to 20% of the braking i really dont think that would be an issue you would notice IE 5%ish less of 15% from side to side would be about the same as unevenly worn pads accross the axle and that is something only the MOT brake roller would show up, 99.9% of drivers would never notice the issue till it was shown up on a specific test machine, and as soon as the water boiled off there would be no issue, not all cars have them, some do some dont and TBH i dont even see an increase in pad wear or rear caliper siezing on vehicals without them, hense i remove them without issue if the customer doesn't want to pay for a replacement.
