Hi,

bought a used car on Friday (Hyundai Getz 1.3), highlighting oil leak advisory on old MOTs, dealer advised repaired by replacing seal.

Car still leaking all weekend, cleaned under car which made the leak worse (lost all oil overnight, luckily had paint tray under to catch oil), took car back this morning dealer advised cleaning car caused holes, is this possible or did cleaning just remove sort slowing leak?

Thanks

Emanresu

I guess the sump is rotten and full of pinholes and you have cleaned off the dirt that was holding the oil in.

Time for a new sump.

As it was bought on Friday should that be something the dealer should fix for free?

Probably some horrible bodge of silicon sealant rather than dirt. Has the sump got battle-scars from repeated high-speed interfacing with sleeping policemen?

I took it back this morning. He phoned at lunchtime asking if I used a pressure hose and was claiming that caused the holes.

Sounds like the dealer is going to be difficult ,good luck with this but a sump that leaks like this is not acceptable.

A pressure washer won't make holes in metal otherwise we wouldn't use them on our cars. the sump must have already been damaged for it to leak. Come to that, in 40 years I've never seen a sump that's leaked from the pan or underside. Has it had impact damage?

Rotten sumps are pretty common, especially on cheap Korean cars. I see a few in the garage every year. Poor quality steel.

Well, that's definitely a new one... Yes, something designed to hold hot oil can definitely be destroyed by washing... <rolls eyes>

How cheap was the car?
How much ballache are you willing to go to, in order to get somebody else to pay the £30 new ones are on eBay for...? It's going to take about half an hour to fit.

Car was £700. if they fix it without charging then that's fine, but he was banging on about his suppliers quoting ridiculous prices for the sump, even though Euro Car parts had one for £50.

I had a leaky sump on my old metro.
Cleaned it up, and then threw talc all over it to identify where it was coming from.
turns out it was everywhere. it had many pin holes all over the sump.

I removed it and patched the holes from the inside with some 2-part putty/metal stuff.

never had a problem with the sump again... shame about everything else haha.

My nephew had a Fiat Punto that rusted through it's sump.

Don't know if any impact had accelerated the failure but it deffo rusted out......because Fiat.

Yeh, forget going legal... It got you home, right? Anything beyond that's a bonus.

Try a google 'car sump rusted through' & quite a lot of results.
A steel sump is just another pieces of thin steel usually with very little paint or any other rust preventer in an exposed position so it's no surprise that they can & do rust through from the outside.

I would buy the £50 sump if dealer is awkward.
Another solution Is POR50 fuel tank sealer probably half the price but the same amount of effort required to do the job as replacing the sump
