I am looking to jumpstart a 1.8L petrol car which has a battery that's been flat for about 6-8 months (no trickle/maintenance charging etc). It's not been driven at all.

I'm now looking to jumpstart this to try and sell it as a runner rather than a non-runner.

What kit would I need to be able to jumpstart it?

Would a trickle charger of this sort do the trick?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01C781H2W/ref...

Or would i have to get a 'proper' jump start kit?

Suggestions of suitable kit of either sort would be really appreciated.

You probably need a new battery.

Take the battery out and ask your local garage to charge it.

Great idea - hadn't thought of that smile

Would that be cheaper than a trickle charger (~15 quid, if it works)?

A trickle charger probably wouldn't do it. I assume you have another car, I'd just use jumpleads from that to see if it'll start.

Yep, i have another car (1.4L Petrol, if it matters) - would that work?

Also, is there a risk to the electricals of either car (particularly the 'donor' car) with this?

Just buy a new battery, the cheapest one that will fits and use it as a positive for the sale.

Chances are if your old battery has been discharged for so.long it will be knackered.

Yep, quite likely after 6-8 months flat I guess frown

Ehh... If this is the aforementioned scrapper Avensis from the other thread, I wouldn't spend the money on a new battery. I'd see if it starts first. Entirely possible it'll charge the battery such that it'll hold a charge for a day or so, that's all you need after all.

It is indeed smile

Edit: but it won't start - not without a jumpstart or similar

Jump leads. Jump start it. Take it for a 40 minute run (don't stall it). Make the run circular. Get back and see if the battery has taken a charge, by turning off and restarting...

Is there any possibility of damaging the electricals of the other car (1.4L)?

I guess I could run it in place for 40 mins?

On the assumption you connect everything how you should, it's highly unlikely.

If the car is parked on an incline then get a few mates to bump-start it in 2nd gear, though don't do what happened a few years ago when we 'assisted' a young lady who had a car with a flat battery in a car-park. We offered to push her car to get it started, so we pushed it along the car-park for a good few yards until she put the brakes on and asked us what to do!!!

Probably best to make sure that the person who is being pushed knows what to do before you set off.

A gang of us pushed some guy around a car park once only to be greeted to the sound of a slow cranking motor as he turned the key in neutral as we gave ourselves heart attacks shoving a dead weight around for no apparent reason!
