Hi there,

I have a 2017 Fiat Doblo 1.3 diesel which makes an intermittent sound which I am struggling to diagnose. It happens 2-3 times a week; it doesn't happen at the start of a journey, only once I have been driving for a while. It only goes away when I switch off and on again. It happens when I am moving and stationary, and increases with engine revs. It seems to be coming from the near side of the engine bay. Fiat aren't sure what it could be, and it didn't happen when I took it to the dealer. Any ideas...?

Here is an audio file of the noise -

Thanks

Do you have aircon, and if so does the sound change when the aircon pump is engaged/disengaged?

I tried cycling the aircon but that doesn't seem to be it as the noise starts on when the aircon is off.

It's all a bit of a mystery as like you I thought it must be an ancillary system.

It does sound more like a noise from an air flow rather than mechanical noise, but the intermittent nature doesn't point to a split hose etc. I wonder whether you have a wastegate, EGR valve, inlet valve etc sticking open.

If you can get it to happen again, you could try carefully listening for it using a plastic hose as a poor man's stethoscope. If you think it does sound more mechanical in real life, a proper mechanic's stethoscope should locate the source pretty quickly. Be careful that you, hose, stethoscope etc don't touch any moving parts - the hose/stethoscope is intended to avoid you sticking your head close to the engine.

Alternator bearing or belt most likely.
