Getting excited about new tools
Discussion
I think I have a problem. I seem to be getting too excited when the chance to buy a new tool comes up.
As I continue on my restoration project I regularly have to make a visit to Machine Mart or Amazon to get a new tool to complete a new task. The worry is that I really look forward to these moments and am happy to pay in some cases silly money for what I think is a quality product.
I was like a kid at Christmas this morning when my new Dremel 4000 Platinum Edition turned up.
Do I have a problem?

Yes and No. I too like a quality product of course, especially when it comes to spanners, sockets, ratchets, torque wrenches, screwdrivers etc....
However, the rest of my stuff is generally cheap junk and it works fine. I wouldn't spend a ton of money on a branded Dremel or electric drill if I could have a similar one for a quarter of the price. I do have a battery Dremel but that is because I didn't have electricity in the garage at my old place... It's not that great anyway. An air cut off wheel does a better job and is cheaper.

Yeah but you then need a decent compressor to drive an air tool. Thankfully I have a compressor as wellHowever, the rest of my stuff is generally cheap junk and it works fine. I suffer this too. Any chance to buy a new tool even if I currently have no use for it. The toolbox will never be complete. Currently mulling over whether or not to buy an impacy wrench. Been looking at this https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke-cir18lic-18... nice and small, not expensive and brushless. I'm not too fussed on blowing £500 on a snap-on one and find them to be a bit big and bulky.

Not at all. A decent tool is both practical, sensous and both a work of engineering and art all at once. I've recently discovered Wera after having bought in heavily to Teng and SnapOn over the years. I've just bought the son in law a decent Wera set for his birthday; for the first time in my life I am suffering severe jeaslousy.

I just bought this one from a local store. Worked great so far but its not been overly used yet.https://www.drapertools.com/product/43785/Storm-Fo...
Not too big and bulky like the 1000nm ones are.
No, it's not just you. I love buying tools, and will often browse Machine Mart just for the hell of it.
I have loads of tools I've only ever used once. Cam timing kits and locking tools for various engines, a splined bit for the cam belt tensioner on a Pinto engined Sierra, slide hammer and input shaft adaptor that I bought to do the clutch on my old mk2 Cavalier SRi. Overwhelming odds are that none will ever be needed again, but I won't part with them, just in case...

No, it’s definitely an affliction. I knew I had no hope, when I bought a tool for adjusting and cleaning washer jet nozzles....
Any details on this? I've replaced the nozzles on my Alfa because the old ones were blocked, and I cannot get the new ones to point at the windscreen properly. Obviously I need to buy the correct tool to adjust them

Paperclip

I work in a machine shop, it must like heaven for you guys.
That said, yes, I do love getting new tools for myself every now and then. Although being a toolmaker by trade, and being a bit tight / poor (sadly its not that well paid of a job), I've made plenty of my own tools. Screwdrivers, pullers, calipers, clamps, punches etc, many weird and wonderful things that where made just to do one job.
