Hello,

My gearbox has been leaking oil for a while now and i've finally decided to get around to replacing the driveshaft seal.

I have a 2001 Peugeot 206 1.6 16v Roland Garros, no haynes manual exists apparently.

From my understanding one should place the axle stands under the sills - however, to me this would be very dangerous. The sills on these cars rust and break. If it snapped while i was under it... no thanks.

I asked a mechanic and he said put them under one of the bars in the photo (can't remember which one).

Can anyone tell me if this will be safe? I hate working under a car on jack stands and want to know that i am placing them safely. I am also going to slide my ramps under for a bit of extra safety.

Many Thanks

I circled the areas i mean in red:

Put the stands on the raised lips around the edge of the shell where the roadside jack would go - it's specifically strengthened to be used that way.

Those chassis members often crumple and rust if used for jacking, that's the most common rust point of the 106 particularly..

Thanks for the reply.

Do you mean the sills? That's where the car is supposed to be jacked from and supported with jack/axle stands from but mine are quite rusted and i've heard stories of them just giving way when people have had the axle stands there. Scares the hell out of me. From their condition i would say it's definitely not safe to support a axle stand.

Would you say it's safe to one of the bars this one time? Can the chassis member deform if i do it?

If the problem is just from them getting scratched then rusting and damaging that way, i could take measure to prevent that and/or paint over any damage to the original paint.

Yes, what you would usually call the sills - there's a raised, double-thickness lip of metal running just behind the skirts which is flared at 4x points to allow the spare wheel jack to locate safely, that's the best spot.

If they're so rusted they won't support the car then I wouldn't bother doing the driveshaft seal, the car won't pass its next MOT and isn't worth fixing.

If you want an alternate point for putting a stand you could put it where the lower suspension wishbone locates to the shell, as that's a good strong point. Those box sections could be used with a wooden block to spread the load, but they're not ideal.
