I've got a 2008 Mazda 2 that hasn't seen much use in the past few months, and after taking it down the road and back yesterday it almost immediately began to make a loud clanking / rattling noise when the car was rolling / moving. It sounds like an exhaust has fallen off and is being dragged on the ground. Which in this case isn't the issue and the sound seems to be coming from the front drivers side wheel. I anyone has any ideas as to what the problem could be please let me know.

Thank you for your time.

Hello Byker28i,

Thank you for the reply the car only has 31K miles on it so could it still be the wheel bearings ?

I'd vote rusty brakes given the lack of use, they should clear up with some use if that's the case.

Have you had a glance under the car?

Hi CornedBeef,

Yep I sure have and it has some surface rust on almost everything but nothing to bad and nothing loose, leaky or rusty beyond repair. Basically what you would expect from a Mazda.

Jack that corner and spin the wheel by hand. Have a good close look at it and if anything appears to be catching on anything else. Could something be caught behind the dust shield around the disk?

It might be worth checking the dampers.

I’ve got a Mazda 2 of a similar age and it’s been faultless with the exception of the (rear in my case) dampers which have failed twice in about 50k miles.

Hello gforceg,

That's the first thing I'm going to be doing hopefully this weekend, thank for the suggestion.

Hello cookie118,

Thank you for your suggestion I'll be sure to have a look at them but from what I've seen so far they look perfect, and are in better condition then the other suspension parts.
