I've been running around in a 2007 mk4 Mondeo 2.0 Tdci recently.

In the last few weeks the engine has cut out pulling up to junctions on low revs a few times and another time it stalled itself while moving. Each time it was ready to restart instantly.

Today it cut out and died rolling along at about 2000 rpm a couple of minutes after starting. Fuel supply felt patchy in the moments leading up to it cutting out and it was juddering then the engine stopped. It's showing an engine malfunction and won't restart so I strolled home.

Before it happened this time I took it to a garage who couldn't find any fault codes but they did replace perished DPF pipes. That did nothing to cure it.

When it's not doing this it runs fine with no lumpy idling, smoke or instances of limp mode I can't imagine it's injectors or fuel pump.

Very occasionally on the motorway it's stuttered but only for a second or so. It was serviced recently with a new fuel filter which could be a factor but again if it were I presume there would be consistent problems rather than only occasional ones.

Anyone have any vague ideas?

Possibly a faulty camshaft position sensor, or the multiplug / wiring right at the sensor - common fault, usually gives some intermittent faults then followed by cutting out & failure to start.

The sensor is located just below the fuel rail, just slightly offset to the N/S from centre.

Have to agree with the cam sensor or wiring, mine was the same - no fault shown on a cheap bluetooth scanner but shown by a garage scanner.
A new one was fitted but the same thing happened a few months later and garage found one of the wires by the plug had broken.
At least I have a spare now.

Thanks for the answers. It makes sense considering there's nothing fundamentally wrong with how it drives.

Well, according to the man's diagnostics one injector is officially dead and another is a bit questionable. I'm surprised as I would've expect more symptoms leading up to it but fuelling has felt a little iffy at times.
