Noise and smell from car, help!

Hello, yesterday I heard a Big Bang noise coming from my car as I pulled off, it sounded like it came From the engine, however I wasn’t sure and thought I might have driven over an object. I parked the car back up and didn’t drive it until this morning a short 5 mile journey to work.
The car is making a whiring sound from the engine in all gears plus there’s a burning smell.
The car also for some reason is feeling every small bump in the road.
There is definitely something wrong, should I risk the 5 mile journey back home?
What could be wrong with it? I’d appreciate the advise, if you havnt gathered already I know nothing about cars. It’s a bmw 1 series msport diesel. Many thanks.

Is it pulling in any direction?

I'd take it to a garage for a look-over

popped spring or something and tyre rubbing on the inside? anyway do not drive it, even 5 miles.

get it to a garage if you can smell burn and can feel vibrations etc then you're literally damaging it more as you drive.

What grudas said. I had the horror of a broken spring that had slashed almost all the way round of the inner wall of my tyres as I drove away. Thankfully this was on my drive and I could stop take the wheel off and see the carnage. I was setting off for 100 mile motorway trip so the consequences of it snapping en route don't bear thinking about. Just looking at the tyre you could see it was flat but you couldn't see the slash on the inner wall.
