My 2012 2.2 Relay has had some on off starting issues. Van has 70k on it, no start stop

The battery is less than a year old and decent quality, this issue also happens when jump pack is applied and battery has been charged with external charger so I think battery can be ruled out.

The starter will generally start the motor first time no problems (occasionally the issue happens first time). Once driven if then switched off and the van is attempted to start the starter will turn the motor over no problems and then just as it is about to start just stop dead. try again, turn over then stop dead. If the key is held in start position then sometimes it will start to spin again a second or two later although i don't generally do that.

Sometimes the starter will just start the van fine all the time, sometimes it takes 3 or four goes. Generally when the van has been stood for a day or two starts no problems. Van always sounds like it is about to fire up healthy then dead.

I have bought a second and starter and will wack that on once i take this one off to take apart and have a look at.

Any thoughts or exp[experience with something like this?

The other day fired up first time, drove kids to school, went to start it and thought it wouldn't start at all. Eventually fired up after numerous attempts, thought I smelt slight electrical smell.

Today van started first time, no problems, kids to school, fired up no problems, went to shops, started no problems.

I can't understand it. Hope when changing starter I will clean and secure all contacts, earth etc and different starter with different solenoid will make a difference

Tampon, its been a while, how are you? How goes the conversion?

Got a video of the behaviour? Struggling to follow order of events on what happens when it goes to start, is it the starter shutting off or is the engine not firing?

I have a not all that dissimilar issue but I think have traced that back to a glow plugs or the relay as it generally only happens when cold. Bigger issues on mine at the moment, the clutch has just started slipping, not looking forward to that particular job I can tell you!

Good thank you bud.

Conversion is pretty much there, walls up and cabinetry is in as is 3 seater rock and roll bed. I will try and find the pics.

Starter seems to stop turning (sounds healthly right until it just stops, no labouring). Basically I turn the key van/ starter sounds perfectly normal and then it starts, sometimes turn the key, everything is exactly same, starter turning couple of turns, then stops dead, key off, then on, starter turns, then dead. Not cold related as normally start first time on cold mornings after a day or two, problem normally comes after it has been shut off and tried to be restarted with an hour or 2.

A day later no problems whatsoever, this morning, no issues what so ever, repeatedly. it is not consistent.

Excellent, look forward to the pics!

Hmm I hate issues like this that are intermittent. Starter motor I guess is the most obvious candidate, could be a wiring issue of some description too. I will have a chat with a mate more familiar with these vans and see what he suggests.
