I know they have brought out a new version...

But: https://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/tools/sock...

But for £120 this is a pretty fabulous deal.

You can accomplish pretty much most jobs with it. And thankfully it's left no gaps to frustrate you. I know some of the bits are 12point rather than 6 etc. But it all has a lifetime warranty and tbh I think Halfords kit is okay if you go for their advanced line.

Might be useful for someone starting out. I've brought one as a mobile set up. You can also get interest free credit. So it's costing me £10 a month for a year. About the same as a weatherspoons beer and burger deal.

That is a pretty amazing deal for £120.

I already have just about everything in the set, spread across various kits, but I'm thinking its probably worth me buying it just for its value as a back-up the next time I inevitably break or misplace a socket, or don't have a very specific size of wobble bar for example.

Good spot Milky.

Very nice kit. I have an almost identical one - just less ratchet spanners, more ring spanners, and less long reach sockets. Used it a lot for many years now and they replace broken items (driver bits) without a quibble.

No idea why you'd want black tools though. Seems they are copying the "black is premium" idea from GoPro!

They have it in chrome for the same price.

For me it's simple. I want this as a mobile set as I help out friends and family. And when I invariably use it in my garage I cant mix it up with my other stuff.

Nice set - I'm not sure why they still put imperial sockets in these sets though...I mean they're unlikely to be used much these days (yes, i know there will be people with a need, but I'd consider them more specialist these days).
The only thing to point out with Halfords Advanced is that if they don't have the item you've broken in stock (they usually don't ), they have to order it in even if the socket or tool you need is on display! If you beg them enough, they will take a socket or tool out of one of the sets on display, but this might not be the case in every store. With the price of single sockets on eBay being around £3...it'll probably cost you more in fuel to get a broken or worn item replaced plus is more hassle.
Also those 12 point sockets aren't up to much torque and will slip and round off if you're ham-fisted enough.

I never know quite how to take a " lifetime guarantee."

Does it mean:-

We buy it in so cheap that if we replace a load we still make a profit.

Or,

Most people won't keep the receipt or won't bother to return it anyway.

Or,

It's such high quality that it's impossible to break it.

Or something else?

I had a 1/4 drive socket set bought for me one Christmas and the ratchet was so bitty that I took it apart and cleaned the burrs off.
Well, it passed a Boxing Day morning.
Still got it, although the clip on the box broke and I now hold it shut with a lacky band.

You used to have to have the receipt, but now I think you just turn up with the broken tool and they'll replace it without the receipt. I've never had to do it though, as I bought my 200 piece set (same as this one) about 8 years ago and none of the things have broken.

They won't, unfortunately, replace the missing 10mm socket and spanner though!

I've had that set for around 10 years or so..

Does me fine for basic home mechanics.

I've snapped/broken a few things in my time, including the middle sized ratchet... all have been replaced there and then, without fuss or the need for a receipt.

I've broken a couple of bits in my Halfords Pro socket set. (Through mis-use if I'm honest)

They replaced them without question and without the need for a receipt. (The receipt would probably have faded to nothing by now anyway.

Returned the one brought for 120 and brought it straight back for 102. Bargain of the year for me.

I've never rounded a bolt with a 12 point. But if its very corroded I'll use a 6 point impact socket.

Side note all the 1/2 deeps are 6 point. Asked in shop if receipt was needed. Told it's not. But that they wouldn't have black to replace it with which doesn't matter for me.

I'd love snap on gear. But the ratchet spanners alone would cost me many multiples of what I paid for this. And the brand doesn't stop me doing pretty much any job on my own car and family stuff. I really enjoy mechanicing and this makes it affordable for me. So I'm happy.

I, on the other hand, definitely have rounded a few bolt heads using a 12 point socket.

For what it's worth, 12 pointers definitely have their place - I've had a few occasions where I could only just get a 12 pointer on and get a couple of clicks on the ratchet to get a bolt or nut off, but I only now use them where a 6 pointer won't do the business due to access.

Again though, £102 for this set is unbelievably cheap. 25 years ago, the equivalent would have been what, 500? Amazing.

1 - No. (I have a Lidl socket set where the ratchet failed after 1 year). Halfords still going strong, and I use them all a lot.
2 - No need for a receipt. Though a lot of people won't know that.
3 - No - just they know that sales volume (profit) will outweigh replacement costs. Much like that shaver with a "close as a blade or your money back" deal.

Halfords Advance is bargainous., and unles syour local is in Croydon, they don't even question a return, without proof of purchase. My local (Somerset) just opens one of the glass cabinets and hands you a replacement item.

You'd be doing well to break a black 6 point socket.

I priced it up online, it’s actually more expensive with a trade card... one of the vagaries of their sale pricing!

Many thanks to the OP (and robwilk for the code). Picked up the standard set for £102. The chap behind the counter couldn't believe the price.

I don't need any more tools, but I'm still tempted.
