Best basic obd code reading solution

I would like to have a way to read and interpret OBD codes when overlanding.
What have you tested and liked as a solution? Ideally not too pricey and as small as possible.
I've had a Bosch BT dongle in the U. S. with apl but the database didn't cover European cars.
I would like to avoid ebay £5 Chinese specials, I've used one in the past and the code reading and resetting was very very basic.
It doesn't have to be over BT but that would be ideal due to small size.
