I have a W123 Mercedes which apparent needs a valve adjustment every 12000 miles when on unleaded petrol. Since I don't know if it was done before I bought it, I went ahead and did it yesterday.

Today I checked the ignition timing and adjusted it to what the manual says. It was half a degree retarded than advised but I did that last year after it seemed to be spluttering/hesitating slightly at the advised setting. It now does that again, although only very slightly.

I will now concentrate on adjusting the mixture on the carb.

Now that the valves are set and the ignition timing as advised, should I now only need to make adjustments to the carb mixture to stop the slight hesitation when on part throttle? Or will I need to go backwards and forwards altering the ignition timing as well?

1/2 a degree out on the ignition timing is neither here nor there on these engines.
How did you measure it!?
What sort of condition are the cap ,leads ,plugs etc ?
It is highly unlikely that the timing adjustment has altered the carb settings ,
I would be looking firstly at the condition of the HT components .
These Merc engines can do galactic mileages with good ,regular servicing.

Distributor cap, rotor, leads, coil and plugs are less than a year old.
Leads are cheap crap though so have ordered some others.
