Wheel bolts or studs
Discussion
Which silly bugger decided that wheel bolts were better than studs...
With studs you put the wheel on and then tighten nuts, with bolts you have to balance the wheel on the spigot with your feet while fumbling around for a bolt, the wheel drops off and repeat...
Guess what I've been doing today....

Owning a bmw I do sympathise. 18” wheels are f
king heavy to manoeuvre into exactly the right spot.
I see absolutely no benefit of using bolts over studs and nuts.
17" with 205 tyres on a MINI (another BMW product)

Have 18" with 245 tyres on the Merc ....
When you are working in a limited space it's even more of a pain. Yes you get the tyres sat on your feet and hold in place, maybe it's my age. Just think Studs are so much more logical.

Yep. Bloody stupid idea. Supposedly it is to save costs, but I don’t buy that. I used to work for a company that produced wheel hubs for Honda and Rover and the studs cost something like £0.02 each. Drill a hole and fit the stud. With studs you put the wheel on and then tighten nuts, with bolts you have to balance the wheel on the spigot with your feet while fumbling around for a bolt, the wheel drops off and repeat...

With bolts you need to drill and tap the hole, tapping the hole is quick with modern tooling, but it still takes longer than pressing the stud.
I've seen caravans supplied with what looks like a long bolt with a thread to fit the bolt hole at one end & the other end a gentle taper with knurling.
Screw into one of the holes, fit the wheel & the rest of the bolts then remove & fit the last bolt.
Quick google show similar on ebay but it would be easy enough to make one & cheaper too!
Shame the car manufacturers don't supply one with the car - although I suppose in this age of no spare wheel, just a can of squirty stuff it saves them a few more pennies.

I blame wheel bolts for the loss of the end of my little finger. Holding a stupidly heavy wheel balanced on the spigot while reaching for a wheel bolt; the wheel slipped off the spigot and my finger somehow ended up between the rim and the brake disc.
The Lotus has a slightly different problem; as always seems to happen the little bolt which holds the brake disc in place welded itself to the hub so I drilled it out; now every time I put a wheel on I not only have to line the holes in the wheel up with the screw threads but also the holes in the brake disc.

My merc's equipped with one of these, it's great. Screw into one of the holes, fit the wheel & the rest of the bolts then remove & fit the last bolt.

That's this week's first task, great idea, thanks. Screw into one of the holes, fit the wheel & the rest of the bolts then remove & fit the last bolt.

Suppose really I should have thought of that idea, similar to dummy studs for head fitting etc
