I have a 2002 Honda CRV auto, 99k miles on it.
Took it to the garage last week to sort a shimmy/shake in the steering wheel as you drive, if you let go of the wheel, it shakes quite a bit at most speeds. The garage ended up misunderstanding me I think and sorted a different issue by replacing a track rod end. The steering wheel shake persisted. They advised the tracking was way out and the driver side front tyre was shot, the outer edge was completely bald and the tyre was pretty bald anyway (I knew this, was going to change the tyre asap)

Now, the problem is that the issue is still there. Taking it back to them on Saturday, they think it may be power steering pump or steering rack from my description. But the pump is quiet and makes no noise, the fluid is fresh as I changed it 4k miles ago. The steering has been fairly heavy at low speeds since i've had it, fine at speed, but when maneuvering, it is quite heavy to turn. Again, no noises or clunks though.

From my description, does this sound like either a power steering or steering rack issue? I've already spent a fortune on this car in the 6 months i've had it and I am not keen to keep forking out...

Could the very worn driver side tyre cause the shaking/shimmy I describe?

When you hold the steering wheel firmly, you can't feel any vibration really, not that wouldn't be expected on such an old vehicle anyway.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Edit - the rest of the tyres are all at 6mm (give or take) of tread and the tyre pressures have been checked regularly. They did the tracking of the car twice and it still pulled to the right I think with the steering wheel dead straight. They thought this may be due to the worn tyre.

Have you not had the tyre replaced?
Wheel rebalance to rule that out.

Apart from the tread being OK on the other tyres do any of them have any other damage or faults - jack up & spin the wheel whilst watching the tyre to see if it runs true or if the tread suddenly appears to kick to one side. Would also be noticeable on a balancing machine
Any play in the wheel bearings?

Forgot to add, partner just drove it and says it starts at 20ish mph and is not as bad at 60/70mph.

I will check those bits. I haven't had much of a look myself yet as I have been preoccupied sorting the niggles on our other car out...!

You KNOW the tyre is stuffed, you don't say you have actually changed it though, for some weird reason!

The tyre can of course 100% cause what you describe change it, get it tracked at the same time & then see what the situation is.

I haven't changed it yet. I wanted to try and find a matching one to my current brand, but they seem hard to get, so it is getting a suitable replacement on Saturday and being re-tracked

Partner has dropped the car off to me at work so that it can stay parked up until it gets sorted.
The steering is too heavy I think, I have never had a car with power steering with such heavy steering, it also pulses a bit as you turn, mostly when stopped.

The heavy steering isn't the main problem for us,. it is the vibrating wheel which she says it getting worse she thinks.
Hopefully will be sorted on Saturday.

Edit - she thinks it is between 30 and 50 that the steering wheel wobbles the most

Heavy power steering on PAS car sounds like goosed PAS pump/rack but one thing at a time.

Really hope it isn't the rack, that'll cost a fortune....

Good news. Changed the dodgy tyre to the spare and the wheel wobble has gone, so far..! Going to get 2 matching tyres on the front and then leave it at that.
