Wife's cars been making a knocking noise from the rear, had a quick look over the rear suspension but couldn't see anything obvious.

Couple of weeks later (I know, I know) still there so have a proper look. Suspension is fine, but tyre is dead.

Plenty of tread, but the reinforcing bands are poking through in multiple places

Note how the profile is not squared either, clear bulge on the edge.

The tyre is 6 years old - my Dad owned the car before and had a blowout on the other side rear and replaced just the one last year, so I guess both had some kind of fault. But not quite sure what!

It's only February - I guess you could say she's not having a Goodyear? laugh

My guess would be under inflation in the past.

I haven't see anything like that, but my guess is something broke the cords and the broken ends have pulled out of the surrounding rubber and started cutting through it as the tyre flexed. Good job you noticed that - looks like it could have failed at any moment..

When the tyre is taken off the rim you can look at the inside to better see the cause. My guess is it has been run flat in the past and overheated.

Could be previous underinflation, but also faulty tyre.
Had a new carm, few years ago. Front tyre blow out, inside side wall, fortunately in slow traffic, after six weeks. Changed tyre, drove it straight to tyre dealers, two hundred yards up the road. We were about to leave them to it, when they called us back, to look at the other front tyre, whose inner side wall was also bulged and about to go. Their diagnosis was faulty batch, which Dunlop replaced FoC, less a small premium for 'six weeks use'!

But yours are too old I fear to claim against the makers!

That tyre looks like it has been driven on when flat & sh@gged in the process & then some low life has re-cut the tread grooves around the edge, when you look closely at the edge tread pattern the grooves clearly aren't straight.

Has the car ever had part-worns fitted at some back street tyre place?

It also looks like it could actually be too wide for the rim.

I think this is very unlikely.

Like I said, my Dad owned the car before for years and only uses one garage, who are a bit "local" but certainly not the kind of place to do part worns or recuts.

The tyre is the correct size, too (205/55/16).

Does it matter what caused it... it's now scrap whatever it was.

New tyre, and a wheel alignment to ensure everythings pointing in the right direction.
