Desperately looking for things to do at home while on lockdown I decided to repaint my cam cover and adjust the valve clearances on my FN2 Civic. While the cams themself look fine I was slightly concerned to see some wear between cams as

I found a picture from another car online and it had scoring in pretty much the same place.

Is this due to the way the cams change over when on vtec or something to be concerned about?

For reference car is on 85k and seemingly has no running issues.

Not sure what you mean by ‘between the cams’, but if you mean the marks on the core of the cam between the lobes they are just from the deflashing of the cam casting when it comes out of the mold.

^ This.

OP what has been wearing against what in your opinion or is it just the scratch lines where no contact has happened?

The cam lobes look fine.

If the bits your talking about actually made contact, the noise alone would freak you out !
As already said, they are cast, unmachined parts that have been 'Fettled' with a grinder.
Nothing to worry about.

On mobile so multiquoting went a bit wrong, but thanks for the 3 replies. In response:

I was referring to the gaps between the lobes, my original post was poorly worded.

Good to know these are simply residual marks from the manufacturing stage. My knowledge of engine internals isn't great so naturally I saw scuffs in a place I thought there shouldn't be scuffs and worried!

As was rightly mentioned if that part was indeed spinning and touching something the racket would have been almighty and probably the least of my worries.

Case solved, thanks all.

I had the same marks on my mk1 Focus. Changed the valve cover gasket and revealed the tell tale marks on the exhaust cam. Car seems to run just fine (just approaching 114k miles) so should be good for the time being!

The Intake and Exhaust Cams are fine.
The marks the op enquired about are on the unmachined areas between the cams.
Maybe read the whole thread ?

The marks detailed in the picture are the same marks as on the cams on my car. I read the whole thread and replied accordingly. Have a nice evening.

Which mark's are detailed?
It's just a general photograph for goodness sake !
For someone who has 'A General Interest In Engineering ' be a bit descriptive?
Have a great Day !

I think by the end of next week everyone will be checking their valve clearances, even those with hydraulic buckets.

I think your right.
I'm cleaning the inside of my wheels today. One off at a time and in the Garden.
I actually miss the maintenance of basic/older cars. There's not much to do with newish, modern things.
I'm lucky I'm allowed to work, but only 3 x 12 hour shifts a week at the moment.
We've dropped onto shifts to dilute the workforce, in at any one time.
Thursday, Friday and Saturday this month.
I'm bored out of my head, never thought I'd miss work !

Ok on the inlet side, tricky on the exhaust side. Nothing difficult about the process itself but the exhaust side is towards the back of the engine bay and angled down so simply an issue of access. I was trying to simultaneously use a ring spanner, screwdriver and feeler gauge so something like the tool below would make things so much easier next time:

I have a copy of the Honda workshop manual to help so if you want a copy of the relevant pages drop me a message. Good luck if you give it a go!
