Today my car has reached 100k miles. It’s a Hyundai/Kia 1.6 Crdi chain driven engine and its 7 years old.

It’s used 5 days a week for my commute to work and on the weekend used by my brother to do some deliveries for extra cash. So it’s used 7 days a week.

We need this car to be in top condition and to be reliable.

What measures would we need to take? So far it’s had 8 services and we are the 2nd owners.

What work would we need to do on the engine to ensure reliability.

Can you guys give me a list of what parts we should change and what maintenance we should do or ask out mechanic to do?

Make sure it is serviced as per mfgs schedule and drive it sensibly.

That is all I have done with my main car and it is now on 314k miles at 9 years old.

If it ain't broke...............

Keep on top of oil changes, perhaps more than set out in schedule as its chain driven.

I assume you've been doing that anyway?

Not quite sure what you are asking, just because the car is on 100k it hasn't become any less reliable than when it was on 99k.

If it's serviced regularly and you deal with problems as soon as they develop rather than waiting until total failure there really isn't much point worrying /replacing for example every rubber bush, every ball joint /suspension an steering component "just in case" if they haven't failed. Or are you keen enough to be planning a complete resto and want it to drive like new again.

As above, stick to manufacturers schedule and replace things when they wear out. 100k miles is nothing.

^ what he said.

It will have a design life of something like 10 years and/or 150k miles. Service as per the manufacturers instructions and by the law of averages it should do another 3 years & 50 without much issue.

All my cars have normally done this sort of mileage. I just change the oil every year, and fix stuff when it needs fixing. Dont do anything else.

It is just about nicely run in, now you can start to open it up a bit.

All the above, also I dont understand why people still think 100k miles is some sort of barrier to be negotiated.

yep this.

I guess its a small island mentality and the time taken to do big miles is more of a factor in condition of a vehicle. I watch a lot of Pine Hollow Auto Diag on youtube and all the cars he is working on are well north of 150k miles, an often in the 300k. But the Yanks wouldn't think of throwing the car away. We are a bit of a weird lot when it comes to mileage on cars.

As said by others, regular oil changes.

It's also worth getting a mechanic to have a close look at cooling system, the radiator and hoses.

Although many technicians do this anyway on a major service.

Other than that just have decent roadside recovery if you're worried.

just treat it like always , service on time , dont run it dry of oil /coolant , dont race the engine until warm

That probably as for years many of there engines got rebuild every 15 years or after 40-50, miles

That and them seem to be obsessed with oil changes every 4-5k miles

Depends what sort of servicing its had up to this point.

Oil and filters obviously.

Has it ever had a coolant change? Gearbox oil? If not, those two are probably worth doing at home one weekend. Basic caliper refurb (seals & sliders) on each corner maybe.

I wouldn't bother doing too much until something starts to misbehave.

I think it’s more to do with cars built 40 years ago. Most Escorts, Cortinas and anything built by British Leyland was knackered by 100k and needed a crank regrind/new rings.

My wife’s Focus 1.6 diesel has just turned 150k miles and only now is it starting to feel like the engine has finally loosened up. For the first 50k miles we couldn’t get more than 40 mpg out of it, now it averages 55 mpg. Still purring like a diesely kitten.

Yup, as other have said, regular oil changes, spark plugs and all the other consumable items that need replacing on a regular basis. My focus is still going pretty strong at well over 110k miles. There was one point where I couldn't remember the last time it had had its oil changed, so off it went to the garage a few weeks ago and when the oil was drained out it was still transparent. Mechanic was impressed with the engine. No reason why a modern car can't do a great many miles

It is genuinely bizarre to me that anybody would consider 100k to be mileage. I can't remember the last car I had that wasn't still in top shape heading towards 200k. That said, I would never buy a Vauxhall...

Teehee.

A few weeks ago I found a Mondeo 2.3 Ghia Auto online from 2007 that had done more than 290k miles. Still reportedly running well. If no-one had told me the mileage, I would have guessed under 10k from the outside and maybe 40k on the inside. Cars have become a lot more reliable for longer than some give credit for
