Having recently done an Oil change on my partner's low mileage VW Polo 1.2 (3 pot) using the correct viscosity of top quality Engine Oil (Mobil Super 3000), filled appropriately, and a Crosland Filter

....I'm a bit perturbed that its demonstrating 'zero oil pressure' for the first 2 or 3 seconds running from cold, which of course will cause accelerated engine wear.

My instinct is to replace it with a quality 0W-30 even though the mfr's recommendation is 5W-30 and its Service History shows its always had 5W-30 . Would this be appropriate, or is there a better solution, such as an additive? Its done less than 500miles since it was changed.

I believe Crosland shut down some years ago & this forum says ECP bought the trading name.
https://www.fiatforum.com/tech-talk/428516-croslan...

Number of possibles but if it wasn't doing it before the change & this started immediately after you changed the filter I wonder if the filter is the problem.

Personally I wouldn't use a crossland filter, use a Mahle / Mann or genuine VW.

Was it a spin on job or an element?

If it was a spin on job, it might need to have a check valve inside, which may be faulty or missing altogether.
This will allow oil to drain back, thus taking a few seconds to rise on startup.

If it was an element, are you sure that everything was taken from the inside of it before you put it on?
Usually they come with the bag with cap o-rings etc inside.
I know it sounds daft and I'm sure you're smarter than that, but I've seen it before, on my old M5 when I bought it and changed the filter, somebody had left it in and there was bits of bag and o-ring in there.
With a full dealer history.yikes

Thanks Paintman and Richie, its an Element type and I can believe anything is possible, even leaving a plastic bag in the Housing but no, I'm confident its all as it should be in there; not least coz there wasn't a plastic bag with it, just the Element and a new Seal.

I wonder if other Users would own up to their own worst errors, coz I think its likely we've all done really cringeworthy things at some point

I'll certainly change the Filter for a different brand before I drop the oil. Seems Element Filters are back in fashion, partner's Polo and daughter's 1.6HDi (ooh-err!) both have them; but until a few months ago,I hadn't encountered an Element type filter since my first car, a Vauxhall Viva HC.

Embarrassing errors.... my first ever oil change, on said Viva, I forgot to refit the Sump Plug

Your pic looks remarkably like the filter on my Sprinter van.
I buy the filters from the local MB commercial dealer (Mertrux in Leicester) & they come with the paper element, the large sealing ring AND the two smaller ones you can see on the nose of the plastic gizmo. Smear with oil when refitting to engine.
Might be an idea to see what the dealer parts dept has.

FWIW for any Sprinter owners mine's a 208CDi & developed a leak from the join between the filter & the housing it screws into.
I replaced the plastic carrier with one from Mertrux & the difference between the old & new is that the new is threaded around its entire circumference whereas the old is partially threaded so I suspect there may have been problems & MB changed the part.
No further issues & the new one came with filter & sealing rings already fitted.
Can't remember what I paid but it wasn't expensive.

ETA. Just checked. £14.03 plus VAT in Feb '19

Bit more. Assuming yours loads from the top pointing down if the big seal isn't sealing - any damage - & air can get in then it would make it very easy for oil to drain down to the sump.

can see a lot of sense in what you're saying there Paintman 'bout Oil draining down to the Sump

Will post an update in a week or so when I've sourced a quality filter complete with all of the Sealing Rings

Did this problem start as soon as you changed the oil?
What is the mileage?
How do you know it's got low oil pressure? They have no gauge, presuming some alarm or warning light?

Are you sure the oil filter cap insert is not loose at all?

You would not believe how difficult it is to buy an Oil Filter with Gaskets & Seals for a 2005 Polo 9N. Only Online Car Parts seem to offer one, of an obscure 'MS' brand , and they want £8.45 to deliver a £4.22 Filter, which is so excessive that I'm loathe to pay.

Does seem to be a new problem since changing the Oil and its mega-low miles at only 79k (that's almost 200k less than my Pug)

Evoluzione: thanks for the comment, but you can hear that its got no oil pressure on start up

Georgy: not sure what you mean re "oil filter cap insert is not loose", but if anything was loose there'd be oil everywhere and the level would reduce

Next move... don't know

id swap on a decent brand filter and see , look up the part on autodoc then poach the part number to find one on ebay , oil filters are one thing i inisist on getting top brands

one other thought , did you have the last oil change done? could it have had issues and been filled up with some thick engine restorer type stuff to sell it on?

no, VW Dealer won't be open and surprisingly if you go to the VW Websites (there's one for cars and one for parts), there's no facility to buy parts online.

I've 'bitten the bullet' and paid £13 for a Filter with O-Rings delivered, ridiculous and a bit offensive, but necessary

Changing to a 0w30 instead of a 5w30 won't change the "low oil pressure" situation.

It's not a problem with the oil.

Filter issue or perhaps during the oil change some sludge or slurry has blocked the pick up pipe or something like that.

Either way , the oil itself is not the problem.

I didn't mean buy online.
Appreciate it's Sunday but a phone call on Monday to check stock & go & collect would have been my course. It would be a genuine part & probably quicker than waiting for an online order to be delivered.
IME if not in stock dealer parts are usually next day as they order from central parts stores, saves having lots of stock in each parts dept.

Fingers crossed it solves the problem.

Maybe it's rattling like an old Transit until oil pressure builds?

Is it every time you start it from cold, or was it just the 1st time after the filter change ?

Well he isn't saying and even if it was it's probably nothing to do with oil pressure. Everyone is flapping about oil filters and that's the last thing you'd look at, especially as it's a cartridge type. Hydraulic tappets, loose pistons and faulty cam variators rattle on start up, neither will be cured or caused by an oil filter.

Get the basics right before going on a wild goose chase.

This is a BMW service info bulletin which covers various causes for Vanos fault codes.

On Page 2 is a picture of what I mean about the insert for the oil filter cap. Obviously yours is present (can see from the photos) but is it properly secured to the cap?
