First things first, completely new to this forum [have lurked on and off for years] and also to the inner workings of cars in general but today curiousity's hit and my google-fu is failing me... forgive me if I'm in the wrong place!

Someone I was chatting to other day was talking about spikes in the context of exhausts and welding and nuts. What are these things? What are they for? I was nodding along but in reality hadn't a clue - usually I take a mental note of stuff to look up later or I ask but I didn't want to interrupt the story in this case and after then it seemed too late... hoping someone can enlighten me!

Cheers

Cor glad not just me! He was saying how they'd worn down at an angle from the exhaust not being attached properly which made me wonder if he meant bolts instead... but the other guy was nodding along like "ha, spikes! those pesky things, yes" so confused

Was this in the context of people working on your car?

If they ask you to collect parts for them, watch out if they ask you to go for a long weight!

Spike could mean a peak, looking at a graph.
Spike is also a term used in rocket propulsion, that refers to the exhaust gases ( air spike ).
Spike was a bad guy on Buffy the vampire slayer.
Before that, Spike was a cartoon bulldog.
Spike is something sharp you would not want up your hoop.

Sunbeam - nope, just general conversation about cars! What's the significance of a long weight?

brman - I think that's the badger; got any more info on what they do/ where they go?

Stuntman - isn't there a game based around getting your hoop around a spike..? or am I thinking of something with different terminology...

In the context of welding onto an exhaust, if the exhaust is still on the car then perhaps he is referring to electrical spikes, which would destroy electronics on the car unless they were isolated.

Next time, stop nodding and ask.

Wow - every day's a school day!

OP - long weight = long wait when you say it out loud - it's a really ancient (non) joke! smile

So many of them: tartan paint, a Reach around, spirit level bubbles, a tin of spot welds .... I could do on for hours ....

I had assumed by spikes they meant the exhaust hangers (basically bent bits of metal rod) that exhausts are hung from. They can rust or shear off for other reasons then need welding on again. (They can break off either the car or the exhaust itself).

I used to throw spike strips in front of cars we wanted to stop.

From reading between the lines on your first post I assumed you meant "hero blobs" as in referring to motorbikes.

They are small screw in protrusions from foot pegs and/or exhaust mounts that are the first thing to grind down when cornering hard on a motorbike.

Not heard “hero blobs” but what a great terminology laugh

We was always comparing “chicken strips” after a ride and whoever had the widest was in for some ribbing of square tyres and the like laugh
