Hi,

I have a mk6 golf 1.4 tsi and can hear a small rattle when accelerating but only when the rpms go over roughly 2000. The cars performance isn’t affected and it idles nicely too.
I’ve heard of wastegate rattle with the mk6 gti’s but not the 1.4 tsi. I’m also starting to wonder whether it has anything to do with the timing chain.

If anyone has any experience or advice, I would very much appreciate it.

That's a turbo petrol engine, isn't it? I don't know anything about problems specific to that engine, but rattling under load at or below peak torque makes me wonder whether it's pinking. Does it stop when you ease off the throttle?

the rattling does stop when I let off. It only happens above 2000 rpm which is peak torque.

Pinking seems more likely than a timing chain, given the symptoms. Maybe get an experienced mechanic to listen to it. If it does turn out to be pinking, it can do a lot of damage. Pinking could come from running lean, using petrol of the wrong octane rating, the wrong plug grade or coke causing hot spots. If you don't already use high octane fuel, try running a tank of 97 and see if it helps.

If it was the timing chain, I would expect it to be worse when you take your foot off the gas.

In fairness, this problem actually became more apparent when I put in around 15 litres of shell V-Power instead of my usual normal fuel. I have since filled up again with regular BP unleaded but there is still a couple of litres of v-power still in there. Maybe it was the fuel mixture.
