I'd like to try repair my tyre inflator, im sure it'll be a cheap and simple job.

It turns on and appears to work but, it won't build enough pressure to pump the tyre up fully, only to about 1/3 of the way if that.

What could be the usual culprit?

Before anyone says to just buy another as they're only £9, mine cost £110 as it has a built in work light and jump starter. Its this one:

no, theres a indicator on the jump starter which tests the battery as being OK and it also jumps cars fine.

Thats because machine mart are selling off old stock cheap. I paid £110 and im only listing the advert to show what I have, not to confirm the prices or try to sell you the item laugh

The user manual below has an exploded parts diagram that might help, there's also the numbers and emails for Clarke parts and service if you need any bits for it.

If it all works but doesn’t build up enough pressure, my guess is that the pump itself is leaking/worn.
