Mrs Churchie's SEAT Arona in for a servce today and dealer technican points out cracks in the gaps/grooves between the tread blocks.
Its not just one, but all four to varying degrees. The worse has a fiberous/string hanging out (see picture).
Now I've seen cracks is the sidewalls on old tyres before, but these are 3 years old and lots of tread left (4-5mm across the width of all four). No cracks in the side wall either.
Could this be a defect on all four? Pirelli P7 Cinturato if you're wondering.

The cinturato’s on our old Mazda 6 did the exact same thing after about 4 years, the sidewalls cracked and also between the tread blocks, the rubber seemed to go very hard as well and the grip level was very poor in the wet.
I binned them and opted for Rainsport 3’s at the time, a really good decision.

I have just replaced a pair of Continentals due to cracking around the shoulder which exposed cord. They still had 5mm of tread.
The other two Continentals on the car were replaced some time ago due to the same cracking at only 4 years old.
Seems to be a frequent issue with modern tyres.

given that appears to be central cord, definitely get them replaced.
Earlier this year I replaced rears on my civic which were Michelin Primacy's, they've been showing minor crazing for a while but nothing like having the cords showing. When i first noticed i took the car round to my friendly MOT tester who said its really common these days on Michelin and Pirelli tyres but not to worry about it, just inspect regularly. In the end 2020 happened and I did next to no miles, then he stuck them as an advisory on the MOT and replaced them.

If I had bought those new and kept the receipt I would be demanding the supplier return them to Pirelli with a view to a partial refund for premature failure.
When I was in the tyre trade we often returned tyres for various reasons which would quite often result in partial refunds. If successful, the amount of refund would be decided upon by the percentage of tread depth left.
You have nothing to lose by trying.

Hopefully the technician pointed these out as a major safety critical problem that needs addressing before you drive home, and also mentioned that three years is way too soon to expect this sort of age related failure. Have the tyres been run while under pressure?Herb ashus boarder said:
What is date of manufacture? In a four digit format like 04 21 meaning week four of year 21
This is what I'd like to know. Those tyres look 10 years old.All Pirelli tyres I've ever had have needed to be replaced before they wear out due to cracking -will never buy Pirelli again.
I had a set of 2 year old Pirelli P Zeroes do the same. I think they don’t like the cold weather (sub 10 degrees I think).
From memory Pirelli were offering something towards replacement with proof of purchase but after that and reading about others having similar issues I chose to switch to Michelin (Pilot Sport 2s) which have been brilliant.
If they’re relatively young tyres I would definitely be approaching Pirelli about this.

My wife called me because she had a blow-out, fortunately in slow traffic. And a few hundred yards from a tyre depot.
The car was a few months old.
I changed the wheel, she drove there and the technician asked to look at all the wheels. He came back to say, come look at this.
The opposite tyre was badly cracked in the side wall, just where the blow out had been.
New tyres all round, I said. Certainly, but let me call Dunlop.
And we got a full set of tyres with a 90% discount for the mileage she had done!
We told the dealer, as they should have told their other customers who bought cars with that tyre batch, but they weren't interested!
JOhn

Yikes. Wouldn't drive that at all as could/will suddenly fail, and if stopped plod would do you on all counts for unroadworthy (and 'rightly' so).
I was stopped recently and grilled/lectured for having just one very outer edge worn bald, only got off with 3 points as I was driving to the garage that had the 2 new ones waiting.
It's hard to overstate how dangerous yours are, if cords are dangling out all the ones inside are bound to be shagged too.
