Evening,

Opposed dual piston motorbike brake calliper.

I pumped the pistons out as far as they would go, obviously one cam out further than the other, and eventually it fell out. I split the calliper and am struggling to remove the piston.

I can just grab the piston with mole grips - I appreciate it may mark it, but the very edge doesn’t touch the actual seal.

If i can get it to twist it will come out but it is stiff !

Any clever ideas to loosen it ?

Internet offers up Stick it in boiling water or heating it in an oven ?

Thanks

Not if the other piston has already popped out, op you need some brake caliper piston removal pliers, grabbing with mole grips will mark the piston which will then knacker the seals.

Or put the piston that has popped out then as above use an airline (or grease gun) to pump the stuck piston out whilst using a bit of wood or the old brake pad to stop them popping out too far.

I have just re-read and see that you have split the caliper, you can also use a large rawl bolt expanded into the piston then use the mole grips on that.

If it's that stuck it's probably goosed anyway.

Can you bolt it down and then use an airline and block of wood? It can't be that difficult. I've 'popped' out plenty almost full way. Then they pull out by hand or lightly with pliers.

You’re welcome. Good luck! I rebuilt the front brakes on an old sports bike. On the first ride with the brakes in factory fresh condition I nearly went over the bars a few times as I braked for corners.

However

30 mins on the oven at 250c did work, just need to let it cool down to remove the melted seals !!

Once cooled those will scrape out easily enough :-) I've found a toothbrush was pretty useful for final cleaning up.

Shockingly for Del that is a good idea hehe

I always get the air-gun on the go now, although with multi-piston calipers it can be a bit testing wedging the free ones to allow the stuck ones out.

Depending on piston size you can improvise a similar type of puller using a rawl bolt.
