I have a hub nut that I cannot get off with my 2ft breaker bar, to do driveshafts/lower suspension arms/track rod ends. I was just going to buy a longer breaker bar, but have been wanting an impact wrench for a while so thought this might be a good as an excuse as any, and will be useful on other suspension bolts I am sure. What I wondered is how much torque I need - would a 400ish NM torque wrench sufficient or should I go up to 700NM? Will 700NM definitely take off a rusty hub nut?

The one I have in mind is the 700NM Kielder KWT-012-51 which you can get with batteries for around £200. It would be for occasional hobby mechanic use only.

700 shoud do it
Bit that depends on if the unit actually delivers 700nm lots have over stated max torque

I'd suggest just sliding a piece of tubing over your breaker bar and standing on the end. Sure it means no new power tool purchase (but you can do that any time biggrin) but it will be more effective.

You won’t regret it. among the best tools I’ve ever bought. Not just for the odd hub nut, but for all sorted of right bolts. Also seriously shortens the wheel change time!

Just a quick check - your hub nut isn’t left hand thread is it? hehe

I did in fact check that (but only after I had been trying and failing to get it off with my breaker bar ...) hehe

Good choice I've got the same. It's a legend for me as it removed a slightly corroded main crank bolt on my BMW V8. Full power and worked it incrementally back and forth over a good few minutes but it got the job done! The socket got very warm so watch out if you're going at it.
There are some situations where you can't just keep buying 'leverage by the foot', like an engine on a stand that just wants to tip over.

Make sure you post a video of removal using your new toy

how much did you pay and where from please cascade?

I am in the same predicament.....bought a Clarke impact wrench this week.......450Nm......but upon use, it couldn't crack a wheel nut - never mind a driveshaft nut.

the Nm figures quoted can be misleading.

I bought an Milwaukee M18 Mid Torque Gen 2 - expensive but an amazing bit of kit, took of axle nuts no problem. I also bought a high torque as well but that’s another story...

It did put up a fight on that side, took a good thirty seconds or so to spin it off - had tried to do it in the air initially and it snapped the disc retaining screws and spun the disc rather than the bolt.

On the other side, it spun it off no bother whilst in the air, as if it was hand tight. Superb.
