Can anyone recommend a good value diagnostic scanner for Mercedes, specifically a 2008 C class. Preferably a universal on that will do other makes as well, they are always handy to have.

I already have a blag copy of Leixa/Diagbox for Citroen and Peugeot which works very well ,is there something similar for mercs?

I had an iCarsoft for mine which was a good compromise between cost and function. I had a Merc specific one but you can get a general one for more models.

Slightly more upmarket would be a hooky version of the STAR system, more difficult to use but full dealer level stuff.

I'm still researching this topic, my mates old car is now off the road and in my back garden and I really want it out of there but the ABS/TC light is on, its not insured so can't be driven anywhere at the moment. The best bet is to just buy a scan tool and see whats wrong with it.

I know the icarsoft v2 is the one to go for as recommended above but is that a tool specific just for mercedes or will it do other makes as well, seems a bit of a waste to spend £130 on something for one shot and then be shoved in the back of a cupboard.

Or is there something that is more universal but will read/reset merc codes as well?

The icarsoft does merc/smart/sprinter ranges. There is the slightly older MBII as well and these usually sell for about £80 on ebay/forums. I don't believe there is that much differnce between the 2 with fully up to date versions.

I have a Merc and can reset many fault codes (I've had a few) using nothing more than a cheap eBay ELM327 OBDII Bluetooth dongle and Torque Pro on my phone - total expenditure was a little over a fiver.

It's not STAR though, so there are Mercedes-specific items it won't do but I can't tell you what they might be (I don't know).

I've ordered one of these for now to see how it goes.

Should be able to get £60 or so back on it if I put it back on ebay, will be virtually brand new anyway.

Can Torque Pro do anything other than powertrain codes?
I don't really know what the OBDII interface allows for but I've seen an issue with three different exhaust sensors, EMU, knock sensor, external air temp and water temp on different cars.

Looking at the displays available, it also reports road speed, revs, throttle positon, turbo boost level, GPS location, air fuel ratio, battery level (volts), EGR and cat temp, MAF...

What it didn't find was any issues with an obviously failing air suspension system.

Right I've managed to re-set the ABS/TC fault with the scanner, not driven it anywhere yet though, it did say though that the fault was the right front wheel sensor and we replaced all 4 the other day so hopefully all is good now.

The only warning message left on the car now is the brake pad wear indicator and that's because the new pads didn't come with the sensor so it just needs bypassing. Even managed to do the service re-set with the tool.
