Electronic speedometer

I have a VDO electronic speedometer which has developed a couple of irritating problems - primarily the LCD which intermittently fails to show any digits and sometimes looks like the Predator's watch. A less frequently occuring problem is the needle going to full-scale for no apparent reason (cured by cycling the ignition).
Very dissapponted given that the mechanical speedometer in my Dad's Land-Rover has survived since 1958 and my 110" has clocked over 300,000 miles yet this modern part is scrap after about fifteen years.
Alternatives are to buy another electronic one or replace with a mechanical one.
Constraint is that the maximum size is 80mm.
Open to recommendations!
