2011 Mondeo (petrol)

A couple of times recently the engine has stumbled a bit before firing up. But this morning, quite early, it really went for it and it needed several attempts to even fire up. And even then it was juddering heavily until I was able to coax the revs up. But after that it's been fine.

The starter wasn't struggling which makes me think the battery/alternator are all good. My immediate thought is to buy 4 new coil packs?

Opinions sought!

If it runs ok when started, then I would imagine that the coil packs are ok. Have you checked for any codes? Could just be a sensor on the way out.

I found 6 DTC codes via the dash but I can't find a definitive list on the Ford forums for what they all mean.
The first code (F00616) was documented and indicates that the battery voltage was too high or too low. I'll check that in the morning but I'm not convinced.

You really need to get a code reader plugged into the car, to find any stored fault codes.

It's due an oil change this month actually but I top it up regularly as it does get through it!
The consensus on the Ford Forums was that the codes accessed via the dash weren't very useful and an OBD was necessary. It's got to have an MOT this month. I'm on very good terms with the tester, I'm sure he'll help me out on the OBD front.

Had in mind after they were launched and subsequently serviced, dealers were using incorrect oil resulting in non start. Symptoms you described seemed similar to what I'd expect initially. Firing up on 2/3 cylinders until the oil warmed up.

Never heard on a F prefix on a DTC

Looks like I've been wrong on all counts...
The code indicated an 'incorrect voltage'.
I went through the diagnostics again and found a reading of 12.1 volts. This morning I put a meter across the terminals and got 12.22 volts. New battery time!

I don't understand how there is enough oomph for the starter motor to spin the engine but not to fire it up?

12.1 or 12.2 volts is pretty flat.

12.6/7 is on the money for a good battery fully charged & every 0.1 volt under that is around 20% down.
