Been told to use a smear of permatex when refitting. Can anyone advise?

All my engine building I have used a smear of slow setting araldite. I have never had one leak or more importantly come loose. U forget where this came from probably a well known builder in the 70's; Dave Vizard or similar.

Only 1 I have ever replaced, I was told to use nothing (as they has a lead coating to make a seal) & it certainly lasted more than the 3 years I had the car.
