Timing problem?
Discussion
I couldn’t get my classic to start. Previously theres been rough running and stalling problems.
After checking that there was plenty of fuel getting through we checked the ignition system.
Although there was plenty of spark and all the spark plugs tested okay we noticed something odd.
The Rota arm showed signs that the spark was only going from right at the edge. Further investigation show that the distributor was not sat completely upright, it was leaning slightly off centre.
We could only adjust the timing so that it started well but with the odd miss at higher revs or perfect running but poor starting.
I took it out yesterday for a run. Perfect starting, it didn’t stall getting it out of the garage etc.
However on a run it ran rough and at lower rpm it struggled to accelerate. Once speed picked up it wasn’t so bad.
Hot starting was. still an .issue but nowhere near as bad as it had been previously.
My suspicion is that the timing problems are caused by a worn .gear at the bottom of the distributor shaft

Before I spend money and time do you think I’m on the right track?
