so the tip run car has decided that the rear hatch strut should pull its mounting bolt out of the body of the car. its stripped alot of the thread so its of no use the strut just pulls it back out again.

so how should i fix it as cheap as possible please

i could buy a helicoil kit at like £30 or would jb weld do or another epoxy

I've been known to address that sort of problem by mixing up some standard Araldite and generously coating the thread before inserting the bolt. Allow plenty of time to fully harden.

If your not precious about the car I would take it to your local garage and see if they will weld it back in place.
No more than £50 and half an hour if that for the job.

Last thing I would want is the rear hatch on my tip car falling off on the way to the tip as its proped open with a large load of garden waste and

Can you access where the strut passes through the body and put a washer and Nyloc nut on it?

If there is a little bit of thread left, bearing retainer, or tap the bolt the next side up

Can't quite imagine the issue as to how the strut pulls the mount back out, surely the weight of the hatch should keep it in, a pic would help.

ive taken it apart now but i think it had been cross threaded before so it was weak i mean we have used it for 3 years or so with no issue but the boot has always opened a bit funny but didnt care then the other day boot was open then the bolt came out of the hole still attached to the strut and the hatch came down as the remaining one isnt strong enough to hold it

its a mk4 golf hatch btw

Which thread is damaged ?
If it's the ball joint they're a fiver on eBay
If it's the receiving nut then I'd weld a new nut on of the correct thread

My son had a Mk5 Golf where the tailgate strut captive nut had disappeared inside the cavity, so there was just a hole in the pillar.

We just removed the C pillar trim and drilled a large hole sideways on (by the side window) which allowed us to put a ring spanner with a suitable nut, held in with a bit of silicon sealant, through to the back of where captive nut should have been and tightened the strut bolt. Once it was tight, just wiggled the spanner free of the nut, put back C pillar trim. A very cheap fix smile
