Why use 'self colour' bolts?

Assuming the same material and grade etc, why use a 'self colour' bolt where Zinc ones are available? as far as I can tell, they do the same job but turn orange much faster!

(I am stocking up on fastneners for my tool kit)...

cant think of a reason to use them on a car ...you want at least some rust protection

Zinc plated and stainless don't accept paint so well, so if the job is to be painted then best to use black.


At the moment I'm restoring a 1953 motorcycle and the "rivet counters" at shows would delight in finding fault with
paint flaking off the bolts.
