Hi Piston Heads., after a heads up.

I have a Nissan Primaster Van, today it decided not to start, not even turn over.
Dashboard lit up, fan and radio came on as expected. But no joy turning over, I actually managed to bump start it. But When I next parked, it would not start again.

Battery is only a month old, but tried to recharge and also tried jump leads, alas still not turning over.

I had heard a low like buzzing whirling noise, coming from under the bonnet, this noise starts as soon as key is in ignition and stays on for best part of a minute after key is removed.

Also as soon as key is removed, there is like a slurping pump noise, that last only a few seconds.

Can anyone HELP! PLEASE!

Hard to diagnose over the Internet, my first thought would be starter motor. But.. If you put headlights on, do they dim when you try to start? If the battery is recent, was there a reason for changing it?

Back in the good old days we’d whack the starter motor with a wooden mallet to see if it was sticking.

How is access to the starter motor?

If you can get a jump lead clamped to the positive terminal on the motor, and touching the other end to the batter terminal makes it spin, you've most likely got a dead starter solenoid.

Did that within the last month... I might be oldschool though.

The whirring noise combined with the fact that it went on a bump makes me think it could be the starter motor or possibly the starter relay.

Thank you good people. The starter motor has been replaced and now back on the road.

It was the starter motor. The battery was replaced as it had died, I had a problem starting it about a month ago, but would start when connecting charger., had battery checked and the garage said it was goosed.
