Bit of a long shot, but...

Had my car re-gassed (R134a) recently. Local garage type place rather than the bigger players, no obvious concerns about competence.

The machine asked what car it is and seemed to know how much refrigerant was required, which they checked against the plate in the engine bay.

No leaks, refilled successfully, air is much colder, but on checking the 'receipt' the machine prints, it says:

OIL INJECTION
PAG oil
g. 10

This doesn't seem a lot. It is also much less than https://www.hella.com/techworld/uk/Technical/Car-a... suggests should be used.

I wondered whether this might have been a 'top up' amount, but given the recovery phase, I assume the system is completely emptied and so 10g of oil is all it now has in it.

Is this a problem? Should the machine not have got it right?

All thoughts gratefully received - thank you!

It will be a top up amount. Unless you've have had a major component replaced in the system, you won't have lost any oil, and the amount of oil that is recovered during the refrigerant recovery process is minimal. Many modern AC charging stations have an oil separator, and will weigh the amount of oil recovered and recharge with the same quantity as part of the automated process.

In summary, it should be all good!

You would likely get the correct answer from the garage as they did it in case you are still in any doubt.

I'm a specialist in automotive ac and sell more AC machines than anyone else in the country by a long mile.

All AC systems will hold somewhere between 100g and 200g of pag oil but the vast majority of that is held within the compressor of the car.

When you recover the refrigerant from the vehicle a lot of the time you won't recover any pag oil at all and most machines default to putting the same amount in as recovered.

Alternatively though you can add a small amount just to be on the safe side, usually this is 5 or 10ml so what the garage have done is perfectly normal practice.

If you were to add the full amount of pag oil you would probably kill the compressor by hydrolocking it.

Wow! Thank you everyone for your speedy replies - I thought I might not get any at all! To find genuine expertise is absolutely brilliant.

As you can imagine, I'm very glad to hear that all is in order and that I don't need to do anything further. biggrin
