Is there any way for me upload a mp3 file here?

My clutch is making a noise and I have a number of repairs to make to the car, the precise method of which I've not yet decided (in particular, engine in, or out)

....so I'm looking to establish the likelihood of me having a Clutch issue

The noise hasn't got any worse since it started about six months ago and the clutch operates perfectly. It only occurs when the engine is hot and the Clutch pedal is depressed. It rises & falls with engine revs. Is kinda a light 'ticky' noise, not very loud, starts quietly as the temp needle leaves the 'cold' segment and takes a good 10mins or more to be at its 'loudest' once normal operating temp is reached. Its not Thrust Bearing Whirr, I'd recognise that.

Clearly I've got no chance of replicating this noise turning the engine by hand.

The car's a last of the Mk1's 2004 Focus 1.8 TDCi, which I believe has a DMF

  • Repairs for the record are...
EGR (which on my early car means manifold off, things got much easier 2005 onwards)
Steering Rack OS Tie Rod, not a big job, but blooming awkward due to poor access
Possibly a Clutch
Cam Belt change
Noisy Aux Pulley, suspect large Aux Idler (small one is new, as is WP), only noisy from warm so could be 'interesting' to identify

Just upload a video to YT & post a link in your post.

Depending on the car with that list it is very likely the engine out approach would make the other jobs much easier.

Clutch noise could easily be a DMF failing.

What make/model/age/mileage car is it?

Thanks e-bmw, I wasn't sure how to upload an mp3 to YouTube...

...but I do have Dashcam footage so I've used that (ignore the visuals, just the noise)

There's three half decent files so I've uploaded them all (the longest is 20 seconds)

2: https://youtu.be/O-ZDsqbod9o

3: https://youtu.be/_WwB-zd4vWE

Its a 2004 Focus 1.8 TDCi (last of the Mk1's)

Clutches on the 1.8 dont last that long, prob the dual mass.

Can take ages till they properly fail though.

that's kinda what I was thinking... and would really like both the peace of mind for Scotland and France trips later this year, as well as getting all the major stuff 'dealt with' in one.

Best make my way back over the scrappy next week for the DMF and Clutch assembly out of a 53 plate they've got in. Just 90K on it (just over half what's on mine), reckon most likely it was owned by someone elderly who popped their clogs judging by stupidly low annual mileage of about 1.5k (and MOT til next Feb!). Having seen it on the Thursday afternoon, I returned with the relevant tooling first thing Monday, to find the Cylinder Head now absent... I wasn't pleased ! Had some bits all the same though, including an Inlet Manifold / EGR assembly doubtless removed by said person

and gained invaluable experience fighting with the OS Tie Rod / Track Rod end and dismantling the other end of the Steering Column and Switchgear assembly for a Wiper Stalk. 5.5mm Hex's (IIRC) holding the Air-Bag on.... weird!!

Not ideal to use second-hand parts in this application of course, but when I looked an LUK Clutch Kit on eBay was a whopping £270. The car's only worth a little over double that, so that's not happening. I will buy a new friction plate for it if I feel I need to

Anyone know whether or not I'll need a puller to get the Flywheel off, coz I'd better buy / borrow one if so... and are there any visual checks I can do on the DMF on the scrapper

Also... one of the things I struggled with was the Bottom Ball Joint Nut. Its a through bolt on these, T55 one side, 18mm t'other. 18mm came undone no bother, but no amount of sense or violence would persuade the bolt to budge. Was I unlucky (both sides) or was I doing it wrong? I've only just 'gone over' to Ford having always had Pugs (405's mostly), which have a nut beneath the Wishbone, onto the bottom of the ball-joint, you then use a splitter or whack the wishbone. Clearly not the case here,,,. Maybe there's a method I'm not aware of? I undid the inner bolts of the wishbone and the hub-nuts and got around it that way

Cheers for the help Folks
