Hello all

Yes I’m a massive idiot (see third paragrap)

I’ve got a Honda Civic 06 plate that was meant to be bought to sell but then turned into a possible stop gap and then the battery run out as it was parked in front of a wall with no easy way to jump start so I just left it for a month or 2.

The other day I managed to borrow a jump start kit thing and turned the car on. It’s parked at my place of work so I left it running for a bit until I had time to drive it around to charge the battery.

Fast forward 2 days, the keys weren’t in the normal place I keep them and i remembered that I never turned the car off :O

I go back to the car and the battery is dead, I’m talking the car not even locking, there’s literally zero fuel too.

I put petrol in and jumped it and it started right away but every single warning light is on, temperature gauge is at the max and the idle is bouncing, I mean the car revving up to like 2k.

I bought the car from BCA last year to sell but it needed a new clutch, then it needed a gearbox, I’ve spent a lot of money on this car and don’t want to spend anymore unless I know what the issue is.

Any ideas? I could take it to a mechanic but then there’s investigation fees, plug in fees, all of that

Thanks in advance

Fully charge the battery with a proper charger, then disconnect it, leave for 5 minutes and re-connect. This should reset everything.

And then maybe re-consider your future career as a car 'flipper'... wink

When the battery died on my Camaro, the computer didn't fire up properly and I got dash lights and 2k idle. Just because a battery will start the car doesn't mean it's good.

May be entirely coincidental but start with a new/ strong fully charged battery and try again.

As posted, fully charge the battery and it should reset.

^^^ This +1

Get the battery out and fully charged.

That would be the first step, then see what happens when you turn the car back on.

Next step might be get a code reader and see if any codes are being reported.

As above - plus some fresh fuel too. I have to say that's the first time I've heard of a car running out of both petrol and battery at the same time. Well done OP!

A bluetooth OBD code reader (£10), and the Torque pro app (£5) are a really useful for reading codes.

Car revving up is something I've seen with a car that's been run dry... I assumed it was something to do with the fuel pressure being all over the place until the pump and lines are properly filled and purged as it settles within a minute or so.

How long did you run it for before shutting it off?

Leaving a modern cheap 12v pb battery discharged kills them very quickly so you almost certainly need a new one.
Replace it then see what codes if any come back.

My MX5 (I know, different) has very lumpy revs once a new battery is charged. It needs running for while to 2000rpm so the cam sensor (?) to reset.

My sister had a Lexus with a near silent engine at tickover. One morning she couldn't find the keys and they were still in the car with the engine running (no stop/start in those days). The car had been running from 6pm to 8am. biggrin

Easily done smile

Mine was me being stupid.

I have an engine start/stop button so you only need the key in close proximity to start the car. I had a senior moment and got out of the car without pressing the engine stop button, locked the car and went shopping.

Many years ago a guy I worked with left his Vauxhall Viva engine running with the keys in the ignition and unlocked from 08.00 to 17.00 in the works car park, to no ill effect.

He was very surprised to see it was still there when he came out of work.

Stopped at the services and managed to do this! Went for a comfort brake and to grab a drink, walked back out to unlocked car that was running - how it hadn't been nicked I do not know

I bought a new battery, fitted it and everything is still on.
