Checking my son's VW Polo over this evening before mot on Monday. I found that yhe rear silencer seems to be delamination, it's obviously several layers of metal and the outer one is peeling away. It's not leaking from anywhere though. Would this be an mot fail or just an advisory? Obviously needs replaced, just wondering if I can get it done anywhere before the weekend.

Had this on a previous car as well I just pulled the bit hanging down off, think it lasted another 5 years before it started leaking. No problem with MOTs in that time.

If you have the MOT coming up and you can’t get it replaced before then cut off the outer layers which are loose.
Tin snips will get through the layers.

I did similar on a friends car a few years ago (a golf as it happens), kept them on the road, got through the MOT and allowed them to get the silencer replaced at a much later date when more convenient.

If you can see black soot then the silencer is leaking and that’s a fail, if no soot then it’s an advisory

I wouldn't personally advise pulling rust layers off as if the metal underneath is weak you could cause premature failure.

As above, any sign of soot will be indication of leak & therefore would likely fail.

Got it booked in for replacement tomorrow so hopefully will be sorted. £110 fitted. Not too bad.
