I’ve got a mk6 ST150 track car, earlier in the year I put it in the garage for some upgrades and it left a patch of oil on the floor, leak was from the rear crank seal. It was leaking while the car was not running though, which I thought was odd.

So I did what was required, pulled gearbox and fitted a new seal. Interestingly, it was leaking because one of the six bolts holding it to the block had fallen out. I almost put the bolt back and left the existing seal in place, but didn’t and swapped it for the new one.

Guess what I now have a leak from the same place when the engine is running.

Is there anything that can be done? Like I say, I know the answer, but thought I’d check.

As an aside, pulling the gearbox is a slag of a job, especially getting it back in, and given how little is left connecting the engine to the car, I’m considering pulling the lot this time.

There are some leak seal type products around but I can’t comment on if they are effective or not.
