Hi,

I just bought new genuine ford silencer for my fiesta. However after installing it, I have noticed that I can’t clamp it down securely and the middle pipe outer diameter is quite smaller than the inside diameter of the silencer which joins by sliding on.
So I am thinking of getting some foil tape to wrap around the middle pipe and put copper gasket maker on to seal the gap that’s left before joining the two parts together.
What do you think about this solution? Is it feasible? Thank you!

I would use a piece cut from the old silencer. Presumably it clamped around the pipe okay, so use that to fill the gap.

I think that would work.

If the pipe slides on enough then you could try a 1 inch slitting disk and make 4 slots at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o clock , then clamp again with that metal removed but obviously it needs to be gas tight.

I thought about that but the gap is smaller than the thickness of the old silencer so I can’t use that pipe frown thank you anyway!

Thank you, I will see if I can use the method you commented! smile

A strip cut from a baked bean tin and wrapped around the inner enough times to fill the gap is all it needs. No need to go overboard on this.

You can get short step up/down pipe adaptors, using tape or bean tins won’t last 10 miles and will fail MOT, use the right bits with exhaust sealant paste for a proper permanent fix

Or buy the right piece of pipe
