Hey all,

Hoping to get some help for my Nissan Sunny 1.6 SGX AUTO on a D plate 1986 that I have recently got.

On trying to start the car, and more frequently over the last month, the engine doesnt start and makes like a continuous scraping sound. Have been advised its likely to be the flywheel thats not catching, hence the sound. At times it starts first time, and other times after a few attempts.

On enquiring with car parts places, they said this car in this year doesnt show AUTO as a variant so they cant provide a match for the flywheel.

Is anyone that is better versed in these cars able to advise as to whether this car in an auto is likely to have a flywheel/flexplate, and also if the issue sounds like it could be one of the flywheel.

Based in Leicester. If it is likely to be a flywheel then can look for local engineering company that may be able to recondition it.

Ps. If any suggestions as to where flywheel can be found or where can get exisiting one reconditioned..it would be a great help!

Thanks

I would first check that the starter motor is flinging out the full throw, before looking at flywheels. Should be a simple remove, clean, lube, and re-instate. Maybe new brushes.

Thanks for the reply. Starter motor was changed recently as was needed. On removing the starter, can see the teeth behind it are kind of eaten away.

Can only the flywheel be changed or is the job a lot bigger than that?

Hardest part has been trying to locate a flywheel from everyone that has been spoken to.

If you are searching for a flywheel you might be struggling as it’s not normally called a flywheel on an auto - I believe they are normally termed “flexiplate”

They are there just to provide a ring gear for the starter to engage with and something to bolt the torque converter unit to the engine.

If you remove it you’ll probably find a company like TTV or similar could machine one up - They’ve made custom flywheels for me in the past (albeit lightened ones to mate a different engine to a specific gearbox)

if the teeth have worn out on the flexplate, most of the cost is going to be getting to it, gearbox out job, you may find you can unbolt the plate and turn it round a bolt hole, as engines tend to stop in only a few places, so the flywheel will wear in just a few places, you might be lucky, and probably easyer than trying to find a new one

having had taken the starter out, could see the teeth have worn. But that was only for the part that could be seen. Will have to have a look again and try loosening the bolt as you mentioned to see if spinning the plate will work, hopefully other parts of the teeth are still in tact. Failing that I guess it will have to be a removal and either trying to find another or re-engineer the same one if cant get hold of one.

Is it a B11 or B12 Sunny?

Might be worth seeing if the engine used is shared in other models when used in auto format

May even be worth asking Nissan Dealership if the part is available anywhere

I wouldn't do that, they'd laugh at you.

Might be a bit of a long shot as they're an engine reconditioners but give Neyta Motor Engineers a call.

If it had been a Vauxhall I'd have agreed with you wink

I actually did speak to Nissan after your message, he advised this plate is not available anywhere through Nissan globally. Did get the part number though, he said to try the usual market places.

He also advised the engine is E16s.

During my search also spoke to a couple of guys that said if can't get the plate then to try and get just the ring gear and they would fit it.

It's getting closer to a solution...I think..

If it is a UK vehicle it will be a N13 Sunny (Saloon or Hatch) or possibly a B12 if it`s an Estate but I don`t recall those being badged as SGX.

Flex plate part number 12331-12M20 Fitted 06.1986 - 10.1988 to engine code E16S.AT.

I`m pretty sure this part number was fitted to many versions of the E series engines back in the day, 1.3, 1.5 etc.

Pic above shows manual set up in the main pic with flywheel and separate ring gear with the auto version bottom right.

Cheers Hammer, I spent a whole load of time on this today and came across this same info. It is an N13 and E13S engine.

I have managed to locate the part, in USA although they don't post internationally. Also in Japan and UAE so contacting them to confirm the part and postage etc.

Part is shared across brands (in the unlikely event should anyone come across this thread in the future searching for the same)

Nissan - 1233112m20
ATP - Z-434
Pioneer - FRA454
Dorman - 04619

Once I get the part (fingers crossed), the garage can have a look if the plate needs changing or only the ring gear (which theyve said is a fairly simple job).

Everyday is a school day..

A ring gear is only for manual gearboxes, item 12312 in the pic.

For autos the "ring gear" is part and parcel of the flexplate and not a separate part.

In either case it`s gearbox out to replace. Approx 3 - 4 hours work at a garage.

HTH.

Thaks again Hammer.

Oof that's not going to be pretty but needs a must. The ones I've spoken to have been saying will charge 20-25 just to swap out the ring! I guess can forget that thought then.

First to get the part in, then to get the car in.. and repaired
