After the next oil change I think I will have close to 20L of old engine oil. Wondering how people dispose of it or find another use for it?

We take our's to the local council waste centre, where they have tanks specifically for oil disposal (as well as small skips for batteries, paints, etc.)

depends if jobsworth is there, some get shirty if you try and dispose of more than a 5 litre bottle of used oil at a time, had this happen myself when one particular bod had a moan....how i'm supposed to fit 7+ litres from a sump into a 5 litre can is another question, so i'd dispose of that 20 litres as discretely as you can in the bin provided.

I reckon once you're pouring there's not much they can do. I'd put some earbuds in before I start so I wouldn't have to listen to a know nothing Veolia (insert your local council's contractor of choice here) drone anyway.

Thankfully our tip staff are really accommodating and don't bother regarding volumes. They'd get told where stick it if they did, when I've just done the annual service on 3 cars and I'm emptying a 20l bottle and another 5l. The GL alone holds 12 litres.

Put an honesty box outside your house. Put the oil next to it and sell it for £1 a litre. The oil will be gone for free within 48hrs...as will the honesty box so make sure it has zero value. Do you have a box that you want rid of too?

If you're a powerful company director, with a floating gin palace, then marinas usually have oil disposal facilities.

Don't remove it. Just leave it in the sump and use the Solera system of oil changes. You just top up a bit at a time as the dipstick level drops, and you've eventually changed all the oil.

anyone have a theory as to why local tips limit the amount of used oil you can dump?

It's got a value for goodness sake, surely the more the better....

Similarly, our tip won't allow you to dispose of metal car parts

Choose a busy time to turn up at your local tip, up-end a couple of 5 litre cans atop the receptacle and leave them be. If the staff there 'know you' and might keep an eye, use the next nearest tip instead.

You could also advertise it free on your local 'Freecycle' site, someone 'll see to it that it goes in the fuel tank of an old Diesel vehicle.... recycling's good isn't it !!

I also put old oil on my fence, mixed with Creosote substitute, a dying practice I believe

Put it on FB marketplace for free, someone may take it.
Ask at your local garage, see what they say. They may take it for a small fee.

Don't some old school workshops burn old oil for heating?

Not been legal for a while, however plenty of diesel space heaters will run on a mix of diesel/old oil, I splash a litre in the tank of mine every now and then.

Also got a Petter PH2 engine that will run on just about anything it seems.

This would be my recommendation, a lot of garages use old oil to heat their workshops, if servicing work is light they may be a few gallons short.

Because the tip is free for domestic users, and old cars and gall9ns of engine oil is a bit commercial.

This is exactly why flytipping is a thing.

Trouble is some of us old dads end up being the service centre for not only our own but our kids cars too, not commercial but you can soon end up with 40+ litre of old oil, and if you do a full service on a Landcruiser or Hilux incl all the transmission you've got nearly 20 litres just there.

I know. have several cars, adn I have a lot of old oil.

I have also made myself known to the tip staff, who know I have several cars, and it's all good. But the reason tips don't accept large quantities of oil or car parts remains. As does the reason for fly tipping.
