Big Valve clearance causing tapping/ticking noise???
Discussion
So I’ve just bought a forged 4efte engine for a starlet glanza, used, finally got it in and mapped running fine.
I’ve noticed it’s got a ticking/ tappety noise on idle seems to disappear as soon as even the slightest bit of throttle is given. The tap doesn’t increase with rpm
Now I’m looking at my valve clearance and the exhausts are a tad loose average of 0.05-0.1 accross all of them (not one is within spec which should be 0.3 +\- 0.03) most reading 0.35-0.4mm
Intakes are closer to spec but a little bit tight if anything so I’m thinking exhaust side may be causing my issue.
My question would be, is this little amount over likely to cause any sort of noise? Before I go down the road of taking the cams out and rectifying it for it not to be the issue?
Thanks in advance for any replies

If the sound does not change i.e match the increase in revs (albeit at half the rate) then it is unlikely to be the valve clearances. That might well point to more serious issues such as piston slap.
As other posters have said - sort the valve clearances and eliminate that possibility. Then possibly things either go well or need further examination.
