Hi guys.

Nissan Terrano II - when I bought it seller told me he had selaed up Sunroof due to leaks. It is now leaking again. I thought it was gaffer tape been applied, just been up there (Pics below) its actually some sort of bitumen.

Ive already spent a good 20 mins on it and scratched a bit of the roof - im using knives and scrapers - is there a more elegant way of removing this stuff, so I can access the drain hoses, and check they are clear?

My plan was to remove the tape and clean the sunroof/ roof, then take it to a sunroof specialist to have the gaskets replaced - its a decent car underneath

Or is it pointless and I should jsut apply gaffer tape and hope for the best?

Given that task, I would…

Slit along the seal, pop the roof up and remove the glass so you can get all around the bitumin on both parts with some solvent and plastic scrapers.

Or it just looks like grey silicone sealant from a DIY store, get another tube and dive it another coating if you aren't worried about using the sunroof

If you're going to spend the money on a specialist repair (replacement?), why diddle about with it? Let the specialist do it - they will have seen this before!

No way you`re getting that gloop off successfully.

Looks like a factory tilt / slide roof.

Will be everywhere in the mechanism and the rubbers will be goosed.

I also doubt a sunroof specialist will be much help with parts for a factory roof.

Pic shows the parts catalogue of what it`s likely to be. There are no rubber seals listed, they are part of the glass and were never sold separately. Most Nissans of this era were the same.

Only real option would be a complete assembly from a breaker, but long since out of production and finding a good one won`t be easy.

I've reached out to a local specialist.

Depending on what they say I'll just bodge it up again

If you end up with tape to seal it use "helicopter tape" expensive but uv stable and lasts.

If you decide it’s too much hassle, clean it up and make it look tidy then take it to a vehicle wrapping/sign company and have them over lay a piece of clear/optically clear vinyl that’s 3-4 inches bigger than the sunroof all around.

After that, pull the fuse or disable it in some way and then forget about it.
