Hi there,

I'm getting brake judder and I want to check the brake disc run out on my MG ZT.

There are loads of dial indicators on amazon for between £20 and £40 but they seem worryingly cheap.

Any other recommendations for a keen but largely clueless home mechanic? Must come with a stand of some kind.

Thanks.

They are pretty simple,so shouldn't cost too much.
Can you just tape a pencil to the upright?

They will be fine for that level of work.

In my experience its not worth checking for run out. Spend your time checking sliding pins, (if it has them) or pistons move easily. Much more likely to be the brake disk too thin and over heating or a dragging brake and therefore over heating. Either way this can cause warping.

I bought some second hand Starrett stuff off ebay for exactly the same purpose as you need. Worked fine and cost about £20 delivered
