Having decided on a second hand 2 post lift it being 3 phase and my only having a single phase supply I now need pointing to a £ phase converter. The current motor is a Hofmann 3KW running a mechanical screw type lift Holman 2.5 ton lift. I`m purely a classic car enthusiast so it will not be "over worked". Once a suitable converter has been purchased I will get a qualified guy in to sort it.

I looked at doing something similar with a lathe years ago and decided not to bother. But looking around now they seem to have come a long way and machine mart now lists a set of Clarke converters, you need a 20a supply:-

Other option is change the motor for the equivalent single phase unit, still probably need a good 16a+ supply for a 3kw motor.

A very apt typo.

I hope the secondhand 2-post lift was cheap.

Copied from the linked Machine Mart / Clarke page....
"THESE CONVERTERS ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR USE WITH CAR HOISTS, COMPRESSORS & VACUUM PUMPS DUE TO THEIR HIGH START UP LOADS." banghead

If the motor can be wired for 230V (should say on its data plate), you could use a drive like this:

I've got something similar on my lathe which works very well.

On the reviews there is a guy who said he has used it on his 4 poster hoist. I would imagine if you over spec it then you have a good chance of being ok. Any 3 phase motor has a high start current and big enough ones require a star/delta setup.
You put a lathe in a high enough gear you can hear them strain as they start up and ramp up to speed.
